We are pleased to announce that we have added an additional EU Scale (EN Standard 13826) to the Peak Flow assessment of lung function within V5 – our web based software.

Since 1959, Peak Expiratory Flow (PEF) of lung function has been measured using the Wright – McKerrow scale. In 2004, as a means of eliminating inconsistencies, it was decided to adopt a new EU (EN Standard 13826) Scale, developed to improve management of asthma and other respiratory diseases.

You will now get the option to report against the Wright – McKerrow scale or the EU scale by clicking on the appropriate radio button. Depending on where you are located, your country’s guidelines and which Peak Flow unit/ Spirometer device you use, will determine which test to opt for.

New Peak Flow meters bought in the UK have EU units (in blue text on a yellow background and the wording EN 13826 printed alongside the Scale). Which Meter Do I Have ?

The norms and scaling are available via the Norms Explorer under Lung Function, accessible through the “Resources” tab in V5.
